How to View Accented Letters in CSV Files

Overview

Our platform creates CSV files that are compliant with the UTF-8 standard. UTF-8 is a standard coding that is used to ensure that CSV files are compatible with all operating systems.

If you use Microsoft Excel to open CSV files, you may see some errors that arise when there are letters with accents (for example, è,é,ö, etc).

This is a known issue with Microsoft Excel having errors when viewing accented letters in a CSV file. 

In order to resolve any issues you may encounter regarding viewing letters with accents, please read on to learn more.

If you are using a Apple/Mac device:

Method 1:

  1. Download the CSV 
  2. Open the CSV in Mac’s “Numbers” app. This is the Apple equivalent of Microsoft Excel

You should now be able to view accented letters in Numbers.

Method 2:

  1. Download the CSV 
  2. Open Microsoft Excel
  3. Select “Data”

  4. Select “From Text” and locate the desired CSV file.

  5. In the Text Import Wizard, Ensure the following options are selected
    • Delimited
    • File Origin: UTF-8

  6. Click “Next"
  7. Select Comma under Delimiters

  8. Click “Next” and “Finish”

You should now be able to view all accented letters in Excel.


If you are using a Windows Device:

Method 1

  1. On a Windows computer, open the CSV file using Notepad.
  2. Select "File > Save As".
  3. In the dialog window that appears - select "ANSI" from the "Encoding" field

  4. Click "Save".

You should now be able to view all accented letters in Excel.

Method 2

  1. Download the CSV
  2. Open Microsoft Excel 
  3. Go to “Data”

  4. Select “From Text” and locate the desired CSV file
  5. In the Text Import Wizard, ensure the following options are selected
     
    • Delimited
    • File Origin: UTF-8

  6. Click “Next”
  7. Select Comma under Delimiters
  8. Click “Next” and “Finish”

You should now be able to view all accented letters in Excel.
